The castern end of Burlington Street in 1907. The solid-looking house blocked the entry to Church way for a few more months, being demolished in 1908 to enable some road widening but mainly to permit the construction of the ‘Alpine Gardens’. In the name of progress, however, mainly vehicular progress, the Gardens were short-lived, being dismantled in 1927 for a road to Lordsmill Street to be cut through from this corner. Although opened up considerably before 1835, Burlington Street was still not broad enough to accommodate gram traffic on Market Day.

Burlington Street about 1910, with tram tracks and cable supports in evidence. The street was named after after the Earl of Burlington, later the 7th Duke of Devonshire, who opened the street in 1835 whilst journeying from Chatsworth House to a meeting of Chesterfield Races. Woolf’s shop was later used by Montague Burton, who opened his first clothing store on Holywell Street.

The corner of Burlington Street and Cavendish Street in the 1940s included multiple stores like Curry’s, Davis and the Strand Library (2d per book per week) and local firms like Voce and Tinleys. Singer’s still occupy the corner site (left), and the overhead showroom of Jas. Woodhouse, high above the pavement, are an interesting reminder of the days when passengers on the upper decks of slow-moving trams were catered for.
