Rail smash

At 5.30 a.m on 11 September 1906, a workman’s train carrying miners between Dronfield and Alma colliery hit a stationery loco on the up passenger line at Tapton junction. Visibility was poor in dense fog. A third engine on an adjoining line at the head of an overnight London-Bradford goods train was also badly damaged. One man died as a result of the crash, and several were seriously injured. Nadin’s view shows clearing up in progress.

In the hours of a foggy morning in September 1906, a train conveying workmen to local collieries collided with a stationary locomotive just south of the skull and crossbones bridge at Tapton Junction. The wreckage was run into by a northbound goods train and several injuries and one death resulted. Disarters

On the 27th December 1911, the Palace Theatre, situated at the junction of Burlington Street and Church Street, was destroyed when fire swept through the building. Five young girls who, it is believed dressed as penguins, caught fire. One of them was thought to have been smoking and dropped a lighted splint on herself. Panicking, she spread the fire around her friends who, like her were wearing cotton wool costumes. Some of the other girls were wearing costumes of another material and were extinguished.

The girls were Elizabeth Bell, Mabel Emily Swain, Ada Winifred Tindall, Winifred Lilian Wood.....all 13 years old. Also killed was Lydia Smith who was 12, they all died the following day.
