Shelley’s Yard in the early 1900’s. running south from Saltergate, this was typical of chesterfield’s many yards, most of them occupied by small cottages built for the local working class. This yard joined Saltergate and Knifesmithgate and May owe its name to Geo. Shepley, a plumber and glazier in Knifesmithgate who was elected a councillor in 1835.
