Any other information? Following Frederick’s death, no obituary was posted in the Derbyshire Times. There is an acknowledgement of his death dated 6th October 1944 and an ‘In Memorandum’ message in September 1945 from his sisters Kit & Joyce.
There is no information of when Frederick joined the Queens Royal Regiment, West Surry (Known as ‘The Queens’), or which specific battalion he was in, the date of death becomes paramount. Being the 8th September 1944, only the 2nd/5th, the 2nd/6th & 2nd/7th ‘Queens’ battalions were fighting in Italy at that time, all part of the 169th Infantry Brigade. British 8th Army.
The British 8th Army launched the battle of Gemmano on the 4th September 1944 and it lasted until the 15th September. This was an attack on the German ‘Gothic Line’ in North East Italy, with the aim of taking the high ground of Gemmano Ridge and so breaching the defences. Although this 11-day battle achieved its objective, it was at a cost of 2,400 British casualties killed or wounded. Frederick died on the 8th September which is mid-way through this battle.
Frederick was 22 when he was killed, but there is no details as to when he enlisted. The 3 ‘Queens’ battalions of which he would have been in, had previously fought in the desert, from El Alamein in 1942 through to the Africa Corps surrender in Tunisia, in 1943. They had also taken part in both the amphibious landings of Italy fighting at Salerno & Anzio.
