Jesse Sam Walter John
At least five Goodwin men from Tupton enlisted during WW1, and they were all related to each other. Three of these men were killed while two survived. Jesse was one of the fatalities but his older brother, William, survived, although he was gassed at least twice (see newspaper report below). Their parents were Walter and Eliza Goodwin (pictured below), but Walter’s older brother, Charles William Goodwin (also pictured below), had three sons who served. Two of them, Sam and Walter, died during the conflict, but a third, John Willie, survived, although he was once shot in the head, then gassed and finally taken prisoner by the Germans. (Unfortunately we do not yet have a photograph of William Goodwin.)
Newspaper report of the gassing of William Goodwin (Derbyshire Courier, 14 Sep 1918).
Walter & Eliza (nee Swift) parents of Jesse and William and uncle and aunt to Sam, Walter and John”.
Walter (above) was a coal miner who died on 12 November 1925 in an underground mining accident at the Avenue Plant coal mine in Wingerworth. He was crushed when a mine shaft collapsed.
This is Charles Goodwin (he was a coal miner and his wife was Rebecca) who was father of Sam, Walter and John Willie. (see below)
The report above from the Derbyshire Courier ( 12 October 1918) mentions John Goodwin was taken prisioner.
