There was no obituary published in the Derbyshire Times, only an acknowledgement of the kindness shown to Mr and Mrs Joyce upon the news of their bereavement. This is dated the 18th May 1945. Research shows that the 5th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment was part of the 11th Infantry Brigade. This unit fought in the Sicily and Italian campaign. The date of Cecil’s death is also relevant as the 6th April 1945 was the first day of ‘Operation Grapeshot’. This was the final attack of the Italian campaign with the aim of pushing back the German forces and gaining the Lombardy Plain. It is probable that Cecil was killed whilst attacking the initial German positions. Operation Grapeshot was a success, pushing the German forces back to the Austrian border where they surrendered on the 2nd May ending the fighting in Italy. |
